Linux on Wondermedia wm8850 7 inch chinese netbook
« on: May 29, 2013, 06:59:37 PM »
@twjordo

you asked me to open a new thread dealing with the special
subject of Linux on wm8850 devices ( e.g. 7 inch netbooks ).

So I have collected the discussions so far on this forum and some
URLs given in the threads and dealing especially with kernel source development
and rootfs files for distributions like Emdebian, Debian, Ubuntu, Slackware.

I am still looking for a way to have a kernel which allows me to have
sound, internal WiFi and LAN ( eth0 detection ).

So I think about the following idea :
in the thread "WM8850 Universal Uberoid v2.0 JB 08APR2013" I downloaded
the Jelly Bean ROM and find therein in the "firmware" directory a file named
uzImage.bin which seems to be the kernel put into flash NAND. Is that right ?

So my next question is whether this file can be used for booting from SD card
partition 1 ( fat32 ) ? My hope is that then all above mentioned problems are solved
as with Jelly Bean all works well.
Also a file "modules.tgz" is in the "firmware" directory which could be used to populate
the lib/modules.3.0.8+ directory.

But maybe the uzImage.bin must be modified : as I read in an article in the net a guy
added 64 bytes to the kernel he extracted from a NAND flash because of  something
he called the "u-boot header"... (???!!!). Whats that all about ?

When I tried to boot this way from prepared SD card the screen is stuck.
It seems to me as if this uzImage.bin cannot find the rootfs on /dev/mmcblk0p2.

When I check the /dev in Jelly Bean I dont find a mmcblk0p2 entry there.
But I find e.g. a /dev/block/mmcblk0p1. Also e.g. /dev/block/sda1 if I plug in an
USB stick. I could mount /dev/block/sda1 under rooted Jelly Bean without problem.

So I modified the bootargs line in autorun.1.wmt from root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 to
root=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 : Linux boot doesnt start.

I also run the Xubuntu rootfs with my kernel which is for download here :

https://www.miniand.com/forums/forums/2/topics/1

I was surprised that this nice XFCE GUI runs as this TV stick has an Cortex A8
processor whereas the wm8850 has a Cortex A9 - so they are compatible...

Of corse I only took the rootfs from the .img file - the fat32 partition I replaced
with the one I use normally and offered for download in this Forum ( see post #1 )

So I suppose that also the Linux distros mentioned in this article might run on wm8850 :

Is LimboPC an Android app ? Does Linux sound work with it ?

I meanwhile also tested Linux under the rooted Uberoid : the free Linux Installer STANDARD app
is until now my favorite - it allows to run Linux from the SD card partition which I prefer because
the img files on FAT32 are restricted to 4GB (?!).
Only sound doesnt work for me under Linux - perhaps I have not enough Linux knowledge.

Meanwhile I wait for the Linux kernel developpers until perhaps sound and NAND access is written.

I want to tell that I have now a kernel which supports my WLAN, LAN, Sound - USB Adapters.

LAN Adapter : Kontron DM9601 Fast Ethernet Adapter ( 0fe6:9700 )
Sound Adapter : C-Media Electronics Audio Adapter ( 018c:000e )

For Sound I activated in .config file for kernel compilation ( info from net article ):

CONFIG_SOUND=y primary sound card support
CONFIG_SND=y
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=y
CONFIG_SND_PCM=y
CONFIG_SND_HWDEP=m
CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=y WaveTable functionality
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y run OSS applications with ALSA
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=y run OSS applications with ALSA
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=y run OSS applications with ALSA
CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO=m

CONFIG_USB_HID=m
CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT=y

So the only drawback : netbook has only 2 USB ports... ;)

Nice one!

Would you like to share that kernel wkt ? I am sure some people would like to try it.

I don't have such netbook myself :( do like those models though! Mine is a wm8650, my 8505 netbook passed away recently :(

BTW All look the exact same: 8505/8650/8850 :android-lol: I am not complaining though because it is a good model!

Sorry for the delay in sharing my current kernel.

I offer it for download from my personal Homepage/Server.
But it is only online from about 15:00h-19:00h in Europe/Berlin
timezone.

Download and un-zip : rename the content as uzImage.bin and use
it in your SD 1st partition directory tree

I succeeded in running now the (LXDE version) of Raspbian Linux on my
wm8850 7 inch netbooks.

Its terribly fast - unbelievable - the fastest system I tested until now.
I feel more speed than with Mint on my desktop PC...

I add some pictures.
One shows how Youtube video runs under Iceweasel.

I wonder if you've got a working onboard network adapter with this Linux. I've installed emdebian to an sdcard and I couldn't get the VT6113 network adapter available. I'm in the process now of building a custom driver from VIA VT6103 driver which is almost the same device, but the learning curve is really very steep.

I'm making a linux based NVR (network video recording) project with WM8850 netbooks, just need network adapter working to continue my job.

Hi, nice to hear that you try to get a LAN Driver running.

Would be fine if it will be integrated into the Linux Kernel some day.
Good luck - surely very hard work...

In the kernel I built I can access the net only via USB LAN/WLAN Adapters.
My USB LAN Adapter is "SV-9700 2013-02, MADE IN CHINA" - some cheapie Gadget...

I recently made another SD Card and run now the SuSE Linux System on my wm8850.
See 2 Images attached. Sound via USB adapter didnt i test yet ( but LAN/WLAN works
thanks to the YaST System Administration tool )
a CON : there are not so many apps available right now as e.g. under Debian.

Here is the article I got the info from :

Hi WKT, great work there, really nice to hear that you've made another succesfull Linux install.
I'm gonna check OpenSUSE. Not a proficient Linux developer here, perhaps I could use it on my project.
Thanks for your info mate, been following all your posts here, really helped me a lot!!  :android-wink:

Another successful Linux installation !
This time on a wm8850 10inch netbook.

I stumbled over the distro "Red Sleeves Enterprise 6" now which according
their website is just now in a so called "Alpha state".
But it makes a very good impression and if I understand correctly it is
based on the RedHat branch : package manager is "yum"...

The repository is still small/tiny.

My WiFi USB stick ran immediately.

@wkt, could this work on a wm8880 tablet? if not, how hard would it  be to port this for wm8880?  I'm quite excited when you mention its fast.

I have no experience with wm8850 tablets.

I also want to test this on a wm8880 ( netbook ) but have not yet got one.

Great news for those who want to run Linux ( e.g. Debian Wheezy ) on an
wm8850 7 or 10 inch netbook from SD card or external USB disk :

look here

https://www.coldplug.net/public/node/16

What is new : now internal LAN and internal WiFi chip work !!!

Have success and enough experience...

Thank You HCH, satcomranger , wkt and others... :-D I have been following your posts on installing linux on wm8850 netbook. The compiled kernel and the scripts would now work... :) And i would like to know if it would be possible that other distros such as arch linux or gentoo would work by extracting the rootfs to the ext3 or ext4 partition supported by your kernel.... Keep up the Good Work and by the way the limbo pc emulator worked like a charm too.. (as said in the xda forums) for emulating x86 architecture on wm8850 to work windows xp. I have a WM8850 1GB RAM with 8GB inbuilt which windows xp is tweaked to work..Also i was amazed by the linux deploy app for android which could do the same work of installing linux (i was using  :android-party: linux deploy till now) inside android.
