Flashing my T02A 7 inch ICS Android tablet (crane evb v13)
« on: January 19, 2013, 06:15:18 PM »
Hello,

while playing along with my above mentioned tablet (Uberizer etc.), I think I made something wrong. Well, I am a beginner ... Although I have successfully rooted my HTC sensation in the past, and upgraded it to ICS about 10 days ago without problems.

What went wrong? I rooted it and then I tried out "Busybox" and had the install procedure let do its "magic".

Since then, the following errors occur:
1. The tablet is back to factory settings every time I power it up.
2. I can not download any app from Play Store. It always claims, there is not enough memory.
3. I am unable to get the tablet into upgrade mode. I think I tried every possible combination of vol +/- keys, power key, and inserting the USB cable. However, Uberizer still recognizes the tablet.

Every help, hint, assistance, guidance is appreciated.

What I have:
- Root Access on the tablet.
- The original firmware as .img file
- "CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.2" available (only from Settings/Backup & Reset/Recovery Mode)
Remark: The original recovery did not work properly as I could go there from Settings menu but it did not recognize the power and volume keys. The CWM-based recovery does.

Info from Settings/About tablet:
Model number: T02A
Android-Version: 4.0.3
Baseband Version: 1.2
Kernel-Version: 3.0.8+ android@Linux #1
Build Number: crane_evb_v13-eng 4.0.3 IML 74K 20120423-test-keys

Info from ElectricSheep ASI/Build Infos:
Hardware: sun4i
Board: crane
Brand: softwinners

Kind regards,

Chris

Hello satcomranger,

the firmware image file is named sun4i_crane_t02a_mxc622x_v1.2.img
And in the build infos, as I wrote, it says sun4i as "Hardware".

The manual says "A10" in big letters.

All this, including your information that sun4i is A10, leads to the answer: It is most likely an A10 tablet. :-)

I think the "v13" is something like a version number.

Hi there,

problem solved! Since I had the original firmware .img file, I was convinced there must be a way to put it back on the device.
The strange thing was, that I could not get into upgrade mode anymore. Although I could get there on thursday. Question: Is it possible that due to my "just installed it, just do it" behaviour, the tablet can not go into the upgrade mode via volume keys and power key?

Anyways, here is my way how I solved it.

Requirements:
- Windows PC with a card reader for only ONE TF/SD card. (I used my old Windows XP PC, which has no card reader and a USB-Card reader stick which can only handle a SD card. You need a micro-SD adapter then).
- empty micro-SD card (I had a 4 GB available, I think even a 512 MB card will do)
- Android ADB Interface Driver for Windows, from this forum (I used the x86 files, of course)
- Phoenix Card Tool (only version 3.01.0.2 worked with my PC)
- original firmware .img file (in my case sun4i_crane_t02a_mxc622x_v1.2.img)

Attach the tablet, install the ADB drivers.
Remove the tablet, start Phoenix card tool.
Select the drive letter in "disk", Select the IMG FILE
Write Mode: Product
Click "Burn"
When finished, insert the micro SD card in the tablet, start it

Immediately a loading bar will appear, progressing. When it is finished, the only Message that appears is "CARD OK"

That's it. Remove the card, start the tablet.

Rooting it:
Uberizer 1.4: Use "9. Android 4.0 ICS v2" to root it. You may check the success by using "15. Check root in device"

Until now, I did not experience any errors.

Where can I upload the .img file in case any other user needs it?

Best regards,

Chris
.... still learning!

Hey Ovations,

not enough memory / insufficient memory problems can indeed be related to busybox, some builds have this problem.

It can be resolved generally by updating busybox on the device.

What busybox bin did you try AND did you --install it ?

Hey Chris,

Hmmm, that could be the problem (without knowing too much about this one).

Have you rooted your model yet ?

Now to think of it, I install BusyBox as part of the root procedure, would be nice to have it as a loose option since I'm almost sure one of those BusyBox's will fix the problems. I've had the same error on my WM8710, resolved by reinstalling a proper busybox.

One thing i was thinking about .. some of these tabs come with a half baked root .. they are rooted .. but there are no signs of the root apps ie  superuser, SuperSU, or even busybox  ..  here is what i am wondering ..
if the half baked root comes with a superuser binary, and then roots it again with the ICS v2 which is busybox/SuperSU... does this crete an issue with the bianry being used ??? just wondering !!

Well that is a real good question you ask there! I've checked this out one on my halfbaked root A13 (I wouldn't know how to call it else lol):

1. Superuser DOES elevate ! (against my expectations! GOOD!)
2. Bin of su is really small, like 6kb, WIERD!
3. Busybox was installed

that is really small .. a SuperSU binary is much smaller than superuser ... but not that much !!As I recall the SuperSU binary is normally around 60K  and the superuser binary is is 300K .. but not be the right numbers but they are radically different in size ..

Yes, I used Uberizer 1.4 - "9. Android 4.0 ICS v2" to root it. Seems to work fine.

The only thing I discover is that the tablets touchscreen is a bit inaccurate the more you come to the edges of the screen. I have no idea how to fix this. I thought there was a calibration tool within Android OS but there is none. :-(

Anyway, the tablet is still working - after all the problems before.

It seems there is no need to upload the original T02A firmware file?

Best regards,

Chris

We advise you to get the original Factory Firmware from your re-seller if we do not have it in our rom's section. Thanks!
