Android 2.3.3 ROM
« on: December 03, 2011, 09:07:51 AM »
I recently purchased a new 7" tablet that came in a MID box,  model #M7206 , it has Android 2.3.3 O/S, kernel 2.6.35.7, it has a 1ghz processor, green LED/ red when charging, does not vibrate, TS works with a single finger touch,  it has access to foreign market and foreign youtube, worthless to us in the United States. Does any one know of a ROM I could use to repair and unlock this tablet?  I have searched this forum but have not found anything that may work. :android-sad:

If i am correct, its imap processor was mentioned on the previous forum once, being the step for better tablets on lower price, i dont think uberoid has support for these yet, maybe the next version, no clue.

Maybe you can use the com.android.youtube.apk  in Uberoid v10.1\Firmwareinstall\packages\fs_patch\root_patch\restore\data_app\app\, you need to extract it on your PC  and try to install it on your tablet.
Or just download it form Google.Same ting for the market (look in Firmwareinstall\packages\android2.2-froyo.tgz open it and look for the map system\app and extract vending236.apk )
Good luck

TomTec 7 (version July 2011)
green/red led,does vibrate,black audio jack.
Using V12 Beta  option 9  All=working well.

Hi,

I have been looking over this site for several days now and as a complete noob, I appreciate everyone's hard work, especially yours HcH.

I just purchased a generic 7" Wondermedia tablet wm8650 from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Android-VIA8650-Tablet-Supports-External/dp/B0050CSHCG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322883013&sr=8-1) which came with android 2.3. For reference it has a green power led and a black audio jack on a plain all silver body, pretty much like the amazon picture shows. Will any of these mods work? I have been trying the various options with 10.1 unsuccessfully. Do I have to wait specifically for a 2.3 mod I saw mentioned elsewhere in this forum?

Hi Q-Diddy,

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad to read you like it!

Android 2.3 on a wm8650 ? That's sure interesting. I don't believe Uberoid supports this model. Do you happen to have the factory firmware for your tablet ? I can take a look at it and maybe add this model to the new version of Uberoid.

I've just checked google, there seems to be some wm8650 devices for sale with android 2.3 but I highly doubt that. I know that the development of the wm8650 has come to a halt due the new (upcoming) wm8710 (quite equal to a infotmic220 from a FT2/3). Anyway, it's interesting that you seem to have such tablet. Could you verify it's really 2.3.x ?

Cheers!

HcH

HCH,

I can only verify it WAS 2.3.  It was advertised as 2.2 so I was surprised to see it said 2.3 in the about section of settings. Alas I did not think to take a screen shot of all the particulars before my so far failed attempts at flashing 10.1. I have gotten a few options to boot up, but I have not gotten audio or touch screen to work in any so far. The fact that it was 2.3 is what brought me to this thread, I was hoping that someone else had had success

-Update-
someone suggested mod option 26. I flashed it and I got the touch screen working. This is surprising since I saw it was for a device with a capacitive screen and mine is resistive, but it is a start. I see so far the wifi does not find anything while scanning, and I am not yet sure about sound, but there is light @ the end of this tunnel

-update-
Well, the RT3070 option did the trick. WiFi is working and I am happy with the tablet. Thanks for all the help here. I will have other questions as I work with this, but they will be in the appropriate forums. Thank you.

Q-Diddy, you can ask your supplier for the rom. As you have bought a tablet from them, usually there is no problem to send you a link with the stock rom and if it is 2.3 it will be great HCH to have this rom for modding and eventually pass to 2.3 for all of us.

Yes the ROM would be great, but I must warn you, I've received a ROM from Poland, a WM8650 Android 2.3.3 that's actually Android 2.2 v1.5.3! In the wm8505 generation the OS version fakeing was even possible by setenv, it's also able to fake the amount of RAM. So with this in the back of my head, I suspect this ROM is faked (I google each week for a 2.3.x WM8650 Android, never got a real ROM, only some "resellers" that claim they have 2.3.3, 3.0 or 3.2 running on WM8650)

Anyway, I'm glad you got your tablet running :-)

Guys, the 2.3 ROM from Eken is for the new Infotmic based tablets. I think that this is actually the replacement for the WM8650. It's a mighty fine SoC, though...;)

And so, the grail quest for 2.3 (or higher) on the WM8650 continues....

Maybe someday - If the new, low cost ARM11 entries (both Info TMIC and WM8710) don't totally drain WM8650 interest first! :android-smile:

HcH your going to defantly haveto branch off 2.3 Roms ONLY for Cortext8 cpus which these manufactures are starting to use (like the newest ones Eken is pushin out)

Well Preceptor, I have news, very good news! NewAndroidTabletPC.co.uk is sending me a few infotmic based tablets, I can't wait to try out 2.3 and mod these firmwares! Current worklist:

1. Universal WM8650 Uberoid v11
2. ZT180v2 Uberoid v1 (alpha is up!) (hopefully a universal, I just need another ZT180 model to test)
3. Infotmic x2x0 Uberoid (again, the aim to make some universal mod for it)

Hi Cael,

If I understand your posting, then I'm wondering if even getting 2.3 on the wm8650 might be a sort of pyrrhic victory, leaving our tablets hiccupping ineffectively/inefficiently as they strive to process code that was compiled for hardware that's not present. Our tablets would have an OS upgrade, but might aso perform worse than they do currently.

Or, is that already what's happening anyway (wm8650 floating point scores on ANTuTu do seem especially low), and might we still see some overall gains if someone figures out a good upgrade port? :android-question:

From what I've understood, the main problem is the API of our WM8650 kernel is not API9 (gingerbread) but API8 (froyo), I've tried together with a german guru to get this kernel running a higher API, we didn't succeed... not even in recompiling the kernel :(

Without a kernel supporting API9 for the WM8650, we can never run it native  :android-lame:

Nice to know that INFOTMIC runs 2.3.3 now, that receive an kernel update obviously. I hope the ZT180 will also receive such update since the specs are quite equal.

I wonder what are the difficulties in compiling kernel from 2.3 android sources to our ARM926 arch?
I know porting are time consuming process, but should be possible anyways as long as we have all sources. Even if WM doesn't do it themselves. Or does the problem involves some closed source WM kernel mods?

I didn't succeed myself, but if you want to give it a try here is the sourcecode of the kernel:

http://ftp.gpl-devices.org/pub/vendors/Wondermedia/WM8650/

I assume this is their kernel for andoid 2.2 version?
I wonder if that API level are really linux kernel dependent and not coded into middleware. Because android emu from sdk runs 2.3.3, 3.2 and even 4.0.1 on the same kernel 2.6.29-something. Of course they could backport patches there...
Well just need to get android sources (they take 25Gb unpacked) and those WM one to see if WM has some binary/proprietary kernel modules. I remember I saw a screenie somewhere with AOSP build running on WM SoC. So it would be possible to compile 2.3.3 from sources for WM8650 devices. Unless they have proprietary binary only kernel modules for old kernel. Usually this is the problematic step in embedded world afaik, due to symbol issues with unmatched kernel versions.
I am pretty sure somebody tried that already and stuck on something there because we still don't have 2.3.3. I was just curious what exactly was the problem there.
Anyways thanks HcH for your efforts on building Uberoid!

Just for the test I took the android emu from SDK and copied the kernel from platform 3 (API level 3, really old one) to the 2.3.3 image. And it does starts and works with that "old" kernel: http://i39.tinypic.com/2l9mbcx.png
So now I'm really not sure that the API level are somehow tied to the kernel. Of course this is only a goldfish kernel... but did somebody tried to put 2.3.3 system files with current WM kernel?

Hi FASONABLE13,

Your tablet appears to use the Info TMIC IMAPx210, not the WonderMedia wm8650 that Uberoid is currently targeting. If your seller can't provide you with a download link for your original firmware, then the safest and quickest thing is probably to return it through Amazon.

If you can't do this, or decide to keep it anyway, there are plans to develop a version of Uberoid for this SOC soon. But it will be awhile before that happens, and then of course that will be a first release version for that platform. :android-wink:

Finally, Eken has posted firmware that is for a 7" tablet (the Eken M009F) that has this processor and supports Android 2.3 (http://www.eken.com/support) so it seems to be somewhat similar. Be careful though - their firmware probably isn't a complete match for your tablet, and you should probably only try it if you have no better options and feel comfortable with tackling however many code tweaks or worse problems that might result.

Good luck!  :android-smile:

Yes, but only a little FASONABLE13,

The exact process varies for different types of SOCs, and I don't have direct experience with yours yet. However, I see that the same page with the firmware download also includes a download for an appropriate "burning tool" and shows the following brief instructions to get you started:

How to Upgrade Firmware On Your Tablet PC (M0013F, M009F)

1. Download the InfoTMIC Burning Tool & Firmware from the links below.
2. Unzip the the Info TMIC Burning Tool.
3. Follow all the steps on Instructions.doc in the folder.

Good luck! :android-smile:
