S89 WonderMedia WM8650 8 Inch
« on: February 11, 2012, 11:18:12 PM »
Hi y'all,
I am Ubernoob here and with tablets in general. I bought my first tablet pc about 3 weeks ago to learn about tablets and android and other cool stoofs. I bet you can guess why I am here...I know right? I bought a cheap tablet which didn't have the real android market and here I am!

Purchased from Light in the box. January 2012

Tablet Specs:

Model number - S89 WonderMedia WM8650
Android version - 2.2
Kernel version - 2.6.32.9-default
Build number - generic-eng2.2 Froyo Ver 1.5.5-20110920.043830
Processor Type - WM8650,High-performance 800MHZ CPU+300MHZ DSP
Processor Clock Speed - 800MHZ
Processor / Manufacturer - VIA
Processor Model - VIA 8650
RAM / Technology - DDR2
RAM Installed Size - 256MB
Display Diagonal Size - 8 inch
Max Resolution -    800*600(4:3)
Display Technology - TFT Resistive Touch Screen(two point touch)
Charge RED LED / Power GREEN LED

Ok so first I tried Universal_Uberoid_WM8650_v11b3 - No success
Next I tried Universal_Uberoid_WM8650_v10.1 - #5 Option and many others

Option 40 worked.
- Had to fiddle around with the wifi for a bit but it connected right up and actually has better signal than before.
- Sound is even better than before
- You Tube works seamlessly and the quality seems fine for the tablet I have.
- Market works - downloaded and installed a few apps all fine
- Will post additional info as I find it.

FAILURE: Touch screen works but the calibration is off by 1" in the X direction and 1/2" in the Y direction.  Calibration fails. Any additional info on this would be welcomed!

I want to thank you guys for all your hard work here. Also your responses to others like me who have no freaking clue what we are doing. I didn't know what the terms flash and root meant when I found your forums. I have spent about 4 days reading here and was able to find most of the info I needed in your responses and FAQ.

Please feel free to move, copy or use any part of my post to help others with this particular model. I didn't find but one other post with this exact tablet.

Thanks again you guys are UberSUPER!

~Katy~

Yes I did with no success. I connected a mouse with the USB port and the mouse works fine with the exception of calibration.  I also tried with several other objects including a stylus and at some point I really wanted to try a hammer  :x

Katy ,

Maybe you just need to hold a hammer and threaten it!  This might work !    :android-lame:

Take a look at this post there is some interesting things to try for tabs that don't like to calibrate .. The best info is toward the lower part of the post

http://www.techknow.t0xic.nl/forum/index.php?topic=174.0

Also you can search for terms such as "lightinthebox" and "S89"  without the quotes.

hello enyardreems, if you have an offset of 1" on X axis and 1/2" on Y axis, looking from your initial post, may be you have the touchscreen env variable set for a screen dimension different from the one (800*600 4:3) there is in your tablet specifications. Touchscreen and display must have same definition. Look in your ENV variables and try to change. After that, you must calibrate again, but this time you will have no offset (but better using a stylus than hammer). Bye...
Almost any problem can be solved by a quiet sleeping night...

Robotop's theory makes good sense.  You could also try another changer option in Uberoid.

Hello Katy,  i think i have the exact same tablet you have.  The description fits 100%.

I've been trying Uberoid V10.1 with changes 2,5,6,27,42.  No luck, got white screens.
changes 15 and 41 worked but no response from touch what so ever.
change 40 was the best.   Touch was responsive but could not calibrate.  Fired up the calibration tool with a mouse to get 'calibration failed' every time.

Tried Uberoid V11 changes 41,42,55.  Not any better.

Then i tried a tool by Blaze ( thanks a lot ! ) to get the orginal data from another unmodified tablet I have.

Here is the data I have from the original tablet :

Thanks for all your responses! I think the tablet might indeed think it is a different size. That would make sense.

Hi Katy!  I have the same tablet as you and I purchased it from light in the box in December.  I did the Uberoid thing but 62 worked for me.....until a couple of days ago I powered it on to play and the screen wouldnt work.  I calibrated with and without a mouse...no luck.  I tried a stylus, no luck.  I checked in the stats area and it does not recognize my touch.  Light in the box offered a refund or $100 credit for something else...but if its fixable I am game....but so far no luck.

Just tried change #62.  Touch is not responsive what so ever.

The variable with the type of touch is different in option 62 :
setenv wmt.io.touch 1:uor615x:0:800:600

Original setting in original tablet is :
setenv wmt.io.touch 1:vt1609:2:800:600

The best results i have is still with option 40.  The problem is a touch area at top and bottom that is not operating.  Top, not working area is an horizontal bar about 75 pixels high.  Same thing at the bottom: horizontal bar 80-100 pixels high.  Calibration does not help.  I always get 'calibration failed'.

Will try again with change #62 but I will edit the setenv wmt.io.touch line.  Will put original setting.

UPDATE:  Touch is not responding with option 62 and setenv wmt.io.touch  line modifed.

Still got problems with the touch screen of my S89 Wondermedia WM8650  8''.

I'm experimenting with different wmt.io.ts.2dcal values ( touch calibration map ).

Does anybody knows what the numbers mean ?   I know the basics of how a resistive touch screen works.

I write software for micro-controlers and do PCB design.  I have an idea of what goes on in the electronics.
It's like two potentiometers, one for X axis and one for Y axis.  When you press the screen, values are read from registers in the touch controler chip.  The values are processed/compared with the map values to get the screen coordinates.

If the values in wmt.io.ts.2dcal are coordonnates then why seven numbers ?   The calibration process requires you to press 5 positions.  That would takes 10 values ( 2 for each coordonate ).   Could it be a X 16bits value plus a Y 16bits value together to make a 32 bits number ?  Then there would be 7 coordinates in the variables ?   :android-question:

I have searched quite a bit but could not find  any info on the subject.   :android-cry:

Could someone inlight me on the subject ?    Thanks !

Yeah I am not really comfortable doing this kind of tweaking yet. The links refer to a 7" tablet so I think you need a good understanding of what those coords mean.

Saifuddin,

There is tons of info on the 7 inch tabs here, if you want help please make a new topic and state your tablet specifications, which options you have tried and such.

 :android-angry:

I think i just damaged my tablet.    Screen stays black when i power it on.   When a Micro SD card is inserted (Uberoid upgrade) I get the "WM8650 Uberoid2.2 upgrade preparing, please wait ..." on screen forever.

I think what caused this mess is that I tried a change #40 upgrade and modified the env_uboot file :
setenv wmt.io.touch 1:vt1609:2:800:600
modifed to :
setenv wmt.io.touch 1:vt1603:2:800:600

I read on some other forum that vt1603 is another chip used for touch control.    I found out later that this a sound chip...   Don't be stupid, don't do this.

Hope my device is not damaged forever.    I tried the reset button and disconnecting the battery inside.  Nothing works.  Do I now have a 'bricked' tablet ?

biggboychris :   I tried the reset button more than 3 times.   I openned the tablet and disconnected the battery for 10 minutes.  Plugged it back, still got the same results.

I have re-build the micro-SD a second time with the instructions in the link from twjordo.  Not any better.

I'm browsing the net trying to find the pinout of the WM8650 serial port so I can have a look at the internal works.  Found some examples here and there but my tablet harware is not the same.

I'll try to post some pics of the inside of the tablet this week end.  Autopsy of a dead tablet

Thank you all for your help and suggestions

Yes there is hardly any info on this specific tablet yet. Also little info on 8 inch tablets so it would be nice to keep all this info together for others. At some point maybe clean the topic up a bit but for now all trial and error is good!

All right,  here is all the info I have on my tablet :

Model number : M80003 S89 WonderMedia WM8650
Android : 2.2
Kernel version : 2.6.32.9-default
800x600 display
http://www.sungworld.com/Html_skin05/enprodetail_37.html
There is a red LED when the bat is charching and a green one when charging is done.  You can barely see the LEDs, no holes in the case to see the LEDs.
4 wires resistive touch panel.   The controler has 2 points touch capability.  I wonder if that's the reason why i'm having problem with the touch.

Option #40 in the changer works best.  Everything works (screen, wifi, sound, camera, market ) except the screen calibration that fails everytime.

The WiFi signal reception was very poor.  I found out the tiny coaxial cable on the Wifi card was short at one end.  Sheild and inside wire plugged together, bad soldering.  I corrected the soldering and the signal is now good.

I posted pics here but the quantity and size of files is limited.  Here are more and better quality pics : http://www.flickr.com/photos/yvesbenz/sets/72157629387989359/

Right now my tablet is stuck at the "WM8650 Uberoid2.2 upgrade preparing, please wait ..." message.

I tried the reset button and unplugging the battery.  Have re-done the micro SD card more than once following instructions of the link of twjordo.  If i start the tablet without the micro SD card, screen stays black.

Do I need to hack in this thing with the serial port ?

Does it look like your tablet enyardreems ?

Some other piece of information :  i'm playing around with another un-modified tablet.  Exact same thing except no Uberoid install was ever made, all original OS.

Believe it or not, the touch screen calibration is succesfull only about 50% of the time.  Whatever the way i do it.

Also, here is the build number :  generic-eng2.2 Froyo Ver 1.5.5-20110920.083830

Is there a tool that exist to extract everysingle bit of data in the tablet ?    I could then restore my defective tablet back to original.  I could even share the complete data with you guys.

I'll continue searching for the serial port pins.

The only way to restore to your defective tablet back to original is to obtain the original rom from the seller ..
There does exist a wonderful tool that if you use it properly ,  you can extract certain files (i.e. env_uboot) from the good tab and use those files to flash uberoid on to your tab that is defective.   The only requirement is the two tabs are identical in every respect.  if you would like to try that let me know and I will find the write up and post it here .

The tool is call    uberoid tool  by diabetu .. I see you did something similar with info from blaze

I confirm the two tabs are identical.  I'm taking anything on the subject.

If i understand the booting process :

U-boot is the first prog started
  - if a SD card is in place with correct files, the scripts/progs are run on the card.
  - if no SD card is in, the kernel is prepared, un-compressed from memory and ran

I can see the "WM8650 Uberoid2.2 upgrade preparing, please wait ..." message on screen when i'm trying an upgrade.  So my U-boot must be ok right ?

Is it possible I have a problem like this : http://www.techknow.t0xic.nl/forum/index.php?topic=881.0   ?

Thanks for laying eyes on this.  Apreciated.
